This basin is situated at the eastern side of the Brazilian Equatorial Margin, comprising onshore and offshore segments alongside Rio Grande do Norte and Ceará States. The Fortaleza High defines the western limit with Ceará Basin, whereas Touros High defines its eastern margin with Pernambuco-Parnaíba Basin.

The basin area, up to 3,000m isobath, reaches 119,299 km², of which 33,200 km² (28%) are onshore and 86,095 km² (72%) are offshore. A 2D marine seismic spec survey was shot recently in the basin. The exploratory effort in the basin has resulted in the discovery of 70 oil and gas fields, 64 onshore and 6 offshore. A new onshore oil accumulation discovery indicates that the basin still offers good opportunities. Potiguar Basin, with a daily production of 110,000 barrels of oil equivalent, is currently the second production region in the country.

Characterization of Crude Oils
	GSI is conducting a new geochemical study of oils from the Potiguar Basin of Brazil designed to identify and compare the petroleum systems that have contributed to accumulations in this important area. The study includes more than 125 crude oils representing the major fields and producing horizons.

Integrated Study of The Petroleum Systems
	This study presents an integrated analysis of the petroleum systems of the Potiguar basin, northeastern Brazil, based on geochemically oriented spec surveys and other geochemical studies that were recently performed by Geochemical Solutions International (GSI).
