Campos Basin

Geological Sketch

Situated off the coast of the Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo States, this basin covers an area of 115,800 km² to a water depth limit of 3,000m. A small part of this area extends onshore. The basin was the target for a recent 2D spec seismic survey. The interaction of petroleum system elements has resulted in an ideal timing of hydrocarbon generation, migration and trapping turning this basin into the most prolific in Brazil, with the discovery of enormous volumes of oil and gas. Current production exceeds 1.25 million barrels of oil per day and 18.89 million cubic meters of gas.

Recent significant discoveries on blocks BC-30 and BC-60, are under evaluation, and their declaration of commerciality is expected for the next year. In other blocks, for example, BC-10 and BC-2, the drilling of 12 wells, resulted in discoveries which potential are been evaluated.

Characterization of Crude Oils
	GSI is conducting a new geochemical study of oils in the Campos basin aimed at identifying and comparing the petroleum systems that have contributed to accumulations in this petroliferous basin. More than 160 crude oils representing the major fields and producing horizons will be analyzed using state-of-the-art oil fingerprinting techniques to evaluate the major factors governing oil quality and quantity

Piston Coring Survey
	A series of seabed piston coring surface geochemical studies to identify sites of oil and gas seeps in the offshore Campos Basin of Brazil have been conducted by GEOCHEMICAL SOLUTIONS INTERNATIONAL (GSI).These nonexclusive, multi-client surface geochemical projects were developed by GSI to assist in the evaluation of the hydrocarbon potential of deep-water Brazilian marginal basins.

2-D Compositional Basin Modeling Study
	A two-dimensional (2-D) basin modeling study has been conducted in the Campos Basin to provide a better understanding of its petroleum systems.This is one of a series of regional 2-D modeling studies being developed jointly by GEOCHEMICAL SOLUTIONS and BEICIP-FRANLAB to evaluate the petroleum potential of several exploration areas along the Brazilian marginal basins.

Integrated Study of The Petroleum Systems
	The region known as Cabo Frio is located offshore Rio de Janeiro state, bounded by the southern portion of the Campos basin, an uplifted basement area (the Cabo Frio High), and the northern portion of the Santos basin (map above). Geochemical Solutions International (GSI) has conducted an assessment of the regional petroleum potential in a study entitled Integrated Study of the Petroleum Systems in the Cabo Frio Region.
